Rocket Engineering
Two Mechanical Engineering PhD students at NUI Galway will research innovative methods of using thermoplastic composite materials to reduce the weight of fuel tanks for space launchers.
The European Space Agency and the Irish Research Council are co-operating with NUIG and several Irish and European companies on the project.

Two Biomedical Engineering researchers and a lecturer from the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering have been awarded prizes for their research presentations at the Annual Bioengineering in Ireland (BINI) conference held on 27th January 2012.

NUI Galway Postgraduate Students win at the all-island Sir Bernard Crossland Competition
Two PhD research students from the Department won prizes at the 14th Annual Sir Bernard Crossland Symposium, held at the University of Ulster, April 14th and 15th, 2011.
James Grogan won 1st prize for the best overall paper at the competition, from a group of seven finalists representing third level institutions both north and south. James’ paper was entitled “An experimental and computational approach to bioabsorbable metallic stent design”, and he is supervised by Prof. Peter McHugh and Prof Sean Leen. This is a tremendous and highly significant achievement for James and for the Department, as this is the first time that NUI Galway has won the competition since it began in 1997.
Neil Duffy won 3rd prize in the poster competition for a project entitled “A Review of Models for Predicting the Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass”. Neil is supervised by Dr. John Eaton.

NUI Galway lecturer secures €1.5 million in funding for study on bone function!
Dr Laoise McNamara
has secured €1.5 million in funding from the European Research Council to examine how mechanical forces, like stretching and pulling on cells, can affect our bones.
One study looks at the stresses and strains that help our bones function well, and is being led by Dr Laoise McNamara, a Science Foundation Ireland Stokes lecturer in biomedical engineering at NUI Galway.

In September 2009, NUI Galway will open a
new degree programme

Energy Systems Engineering,

Students can apply for the course (GY413) using the CAO change of mind procedure up to 1 July.
New biomechanics research at NUI Galway
