Before and after each block of practice education, a briefing session is held with all students which is facilitated by the Practice Education Co-ordinator and other Practice Education Staff. These sessions are used to identify student learning objectives, and to plan future placements.
Placements
The Practice Education Co-ordinator has responsibility for organising Occupational Therapy practice education placements. These placements are as follows:
All practice education placements are facilitated by qualified Occupational Therapists, supported by Practice Education staff. These placements span a variety of clinical areas and geographical locations in Ireland and abroad.
Students on clinical placement in the Midlands and North-west are supported by Regional Placement Facilitators, and Practice Tutors facilitate the learning experience for students in Galway University Hospitals and the National Rehabilitation Hospital. Practice education site visits are offered to all students and educators, and are carried out by Jackie when difficulties arise on placement.
Educator Workshops
Jackie collaborates with her colleagues in Occupational Therapy and Podiatry to run workshops to prepare educators for their role in facilitating student placements. These take place twice a year. One is run in Galway and the other is offered in a regional centre. The content of these workshops has been adapted from workshops provided by Ms. Ann Parker and is also based on the feedback received from educators who have attended previous training days. On average 25 delegates attend each of these training days.
