The Department of Pathology teaches one module of the undergraduate course of
Biomedical Engineering leading to BE.
The course covers the following topics: cell and tissue injury, immune response, healing and repair, acute and chronic inflammation, neoplasia, hematology, ischaemia, and infarction.
Further information can be obtained from
Department of Mechanical and Biochemical Engineering
Module Co-ordinator - Dr F Bennani
Students are presented with an overview of the fundamentals of basic disease processes including inflammation and repair, neoplasia, atheroma thrombosis and embolism. The course is slanted to demonstrate how these processes apply to the practice of biomechanical engineering, with contributions from the Departments of Pathology, Microbiology, Anaesthetics, the REMEDI institute (molecular biology), Medicine, Surgery, Radiology and the Medical Library.
a. The fundamental pathological processes of inflammation, healing and repair, neoplasia, thrombosis and embolism
b. The interface between these processes and biomechanical engineering
c. Application of scientific and engineering principles to clinical biochemistry
d. The body’s natural reactions to foreign materials including joint prostheses
e. The body’s defences against infection, and infectious hazards associated with artificial devices
f. Immune regulation and immunological disturbances
g. Life support and intensive care
h. Interventional radiology in the management of thrombosis
i. Gene vectors
j. Endoscopy
k. How to exploit the field of medical informatics and the modern medical library.
