Course Structure

The 3rd Year Basic Pharmacology module carries a weighting of 12 ECTS. There are lecture and continuous assessment components to the course. N.B. This is a Semester I only module.

Lectures

The lecture programme will consist of the following:

• Pharmacodynamics (what the drug does to the body) and
• Pharmacokinetics (what the body does to the drug).
• Receptor targets of drugs
• The process by which drugs are discovered and developed
• The mechanism of action of the naturally-occurring chemical substances acetylcholine and noradrenaline/adrenaline.

This will take place on Wednesday, 5th September 2012 at 13.00 in the IT250

Continuous Assessment

This will consist of a mid-term MCQ, and assignments based around clinical trials and drug profiles.

To gain access to these activities, it will be necessary to have registered with Blackboard (see below).

Examinations

At the end of the Semester, there is a 3-hour written examination based on the lecture and continuous assessment material.  This will take the form of 8 questions, of which 5 questions must be attempted.  We have provided recent examination papers.  The written papers will comprise 70% of the total marks in each Semester.  The remaining marks will come from continuous assessment.
