Course Structure

The 3rd Year Principles of Toxicology module carries a weighting of 12 ECTS. There are lecture and continuous assessment components to the course. Toxicology involves the study of the harmful effects of chemical substances on living systems, and is a multi-disciplinary subject, spanning the areas of Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physiology and Pathology. The aim of this module is to provide a grounding in the subject of Toxicology, becoming familiar with the variety of harmful effects that chemicals can have on living systems and how these can be predicted, measured and assessed.  N.B. This is a Semester I only module.

Lectures

The lecture programme will consist of the following:

• Fundamentals of Toxicology
• Mechanisms of Toxicity and Target Organ Toxicology
• Classes of Toxic Agents
• Toxicity Assessment

Introductory Lecture

This will take place on Monday, 11th September at 12.00 in Larmor.

Continuous Assessment

There will be 4 assignments to prepare which will include writing an account on a catastrophic event due to poisoning with a chemical substance, preparing a review of the toxicological properties of a chemical, preparing a review of the toxicological risk associated with human exposure to a named chemical agent, and preparing summary mortality data on a selected group of chemical substances.

Examinations

A 3-hour written paper will take place at the end of Semester 1 and will constitute 70% of the final mark. Assignments will comprise the remaining 30%.
