Elizabeth Deasy: "I had been interested in studying physics in college - have always been fascinated by the fundamental nature of physics and understanding "why" has always been a buzz. When I heard about this new Physics and Astronomy course I was delighted - the question wasn't why would I come to Galway to study it, but why not! I can't remember a time when the night sky didn't hold immense wonder for me. I would get to study physics plus astronomy which was like an added bonus. Equally as important was the Galway nightlife ...! "
Arlene Smith: "I've always had an interest in Physics and had hoped to study it at university. ... the opportunity to learn about our universe and stars whilst deepening my knowledge appealed to me."
Caoilfhionn Lane: "The theoretical side appealed and the idea of studying Astronomy was quite original. Before deciding on the course, I talked to NUI,G Physics graduates - the students I talked to had all decided to do postgrads in Astronomy/Astrophysics and were very enthusiastic."
Rachel Staunton: "I have always had an interest in Astronomy. [W]alking home one night when I was about 10 years old, one of my Dad's friends was explaining to me how looking up at the stars is the same as looking into the past. (Also Star Trek inspired me!!!) [W]hen I heard that you did not need physics for the leaving cert. to do this course I grabbed the opportunity."
Sarah McLoughlin: "I have had an interest in Astronomy for a few years. When NUI Galway announced they were starting up this degree, it meant that I was able to study the course of my choice in Ireland. I also have an interest in Physics and felt that [this degree] would give a wider variety of job opportunities,as well as interesting subjects."
Owen Hassett: "From the beginning the course caught my eye. [I] was looking for a course like this and theoretical physics wasn't what I wanted. [On the frequent confusion of 'Astronomy' with 'Astrology'] ... of course reading my star sign every day in the newspaper was just great!"
