Podiatry is an interesting and broad career and graduates have a variety of employment options, both at home and abroad. The Higher Education Authority, acting on its awareness of a shortness of Podiatrists in Ireland, invited submissions from the Irish Universities for proposals to offer the first professional programme in the country.  Having made the winning submission, NUI Galway now offers this sole programme on a national basis.  The programme involves a close partnership with the HSE - the Health Services Executive, to provide a purpose-built clinical facility on the campus of Merlin Park Hospital in Galway, where students will receive their clinical training in addition to the academic programme delivered in NUI Galway.

Podiatric services are also well developed in other countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia.
