Welcome to the Psychiatry Department Web Site

The Department of Psychiatry, NUI Galway, is responsible for teaching psychiatry to undergraduate medical students and also delivers teaching on psychiatry related topics to students attending other courses in the University including those on Health Promotion and Occupational Therapy. The Department provides a postgraduate psychiatry training programme for trainee psychiatrists and staff are actively engaged in psychiatry research.
The Department is currently undergoing a period of expansion with the recent appointment of a new Professor and the recruitment of additional academic staff. This expansion will be accompanied by the revision of the undergraduate teaching program for medical students and an extended research program with a particular focus on the investigation of neurobiological risk factors and neuroimaging abnormalities associated with major psychotic and affective disorders. The latter studies will be carried out by the recently established
Clinical Neuroimaging Laboratory directors,
Professor Colm McDonald
and
Dara M. Cannon, Ph.D.
