Background and Qualifications
A native of Co. Derry, Maria is a graduate of the University of Liverpool, University of Manchester and of Trinity College Dublin. She holds the degrees of B.Ed. and M.Ed in education, audiology and hearing impairment with higher diplomas in education of the deaf and counselling. She has completed a postgraduate certificate in teaching and learning at NUI Galway.
Maria's initial career post was as a teacher of the deaf, working first in a large school for the deaf in Liverpool before moving on to integrating deaf children into mainstream education in Leicestershire, England. She then spent over two years with Voluntary Services Overseas working on education of the deaf on the island of Bali, Indonesia.
Prior to joining the NUI team in Galway, Maria had more than twenty years of clinical experience as a Senior Audiological Scientist within the former National Rehabilitation Board. She was responsible for the provision of paediatric audiology services within several health board areas, covering clinics from as far north as Buncrana to as far south as Limerick and inland to Mullingar, Athlone and Roscommon. She provided comprehensive audiological assessment, diagnosis and management of the disability of hearing impairment for all infants, children and adults with special needs referred within the health service spanning three regional health boards.
She is a member of the Irish Society of Audiology and the British Society of Audiology and an accredited member of IACP (Irish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists).
Teaching Experience
Throughout her years of clinical practice Maria initiated, planned and delivered in-service programmes for health care students and professionals, within the National Health Service and within the National Rehabilitation Board.

Current Teaching Responsibilities
Maria commenced work as a part time lecturer on the Speech and Language Therapy programme at NUI Galway in April 2003, prior to the first intake of students in September of that year. She was thus involved in the design and planning of the programme curriculum from the beginning.

In addition to the above teaching responsibilities Maria has responsibility for the design and delivery of a two day course on Hearing Screening in Infancy and Childhood to the Diploma in Public Health students in the Discipline of Nursing and Midwifery, NUI Galway.
She has initiated, planned and delivered a two day in-service course on Aspects of Audiology to existing Speech and Language Therapists in the Health Service. She has initiated, planned and delivered a short training programme on the Support and Management of the Adult with Hearing Impairment to nursing and support staff of people with learning disabilities. She contributes to the undergraduate programme for Occupational Therapists by providing lectures on hearing impairment and management of the client with impaired hearing.
Publications
During her years of clinical practice she has contributed and advised on several health board reports and strategies. From 1985-2001, in collaboration with colleagues in Ireland, designed and authored audiology information booklets and leaflets on various aspects of audiology service for parents, schools and the general public.
In the period of 1993-1996 she was a delegate in thematic group 5 of the Functional Rehabilitation Sector on Deafness in Europe programme funded by The European Commission. This involved visits, workshops and discussion groups in all of the participating European countries over a three year period concluding with the production of a recommendations booklet in English and French for the HELIOS Programme, Deafness in Europe.

Research Interests
Maria completed a research project on self-esteem and profoundly deaf adolescents as part of her masters qualifications.
Maria initiated the setting up of a professional interest group on Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) in 2005. The CAPD Ireland Group together with the HSE launched a report entitled Current and future service provision for children with auditory processing disorder (APD) in Ireland in November 2008. The CAPD Ireland continues to work towards the implementation of the recommendations of this report.
