VECTOR ECOLOGY UNIT

Group leader: Dr. T.K. McCarthy

The composition of the metazoan parasite assemblages of a series of fish from Irish freshwater and coastal habitats is being researched. Particular attention is currently being given to non-indigenous helminths, such as Anguillicola crassus in eels.

A new research unit, the Vector Ecology Unit, was established in 2007 to address problems associated with insect-transmitted diseases of livestock, wildlife and humans in Ireland. This unit is principally involved in a 3-year survey of Ireland’s biting midges ( Culicoides species) which is being funded by the Department of Agriculture, but also has been involved in studies on mosquitoes and other haematophagous Diptera.
