Donor Funds at Work: Lady Gregory Fellowships
Professor John Marshall, NUIG & Seamus Heaney
The launch of the Lady Gregory Fellowships was held in grand style at the 10th annual Autumn Gathering in Gort in September 2004. The occasion was made special by the presence of the Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney.
The fellowships, worth a total of € 540,000 over a five-year period, will encourage research within the humanities, languages and social behavioural sciences. High achieving graduates from any University and of any nationality are invited to complete research projects leading to a PhD Degree in Arts. Initially, three Lady Gregory Fellows were awarded tenable from September 2005, with each of the three fellowships worth €20,000 per year for three years. Additional fellowships have been offered in the subsequent years.
The Lady Gregory fellowships have been funded through philanthropic support, plus contributions from the Arts Faculty at NUI Galway.
