Members of the Department are active in a number of areas of research, including including 17th-Century Studies, Travel Literature, Medieval Literature, Autobiography, Francophone Literatures (Québec, Antilles), History and Politics of French Decolonisation, History and Sociology of French Sport and Leisure, 19th-Century French Studies, Gender Studies, Translation, French Language Teaching and New Technologies, Literature and Spirituality.

The department’s activity has attracted a number of prestigious prizes and distinctions: the Grand Prix de la Francophonie (2005), chevalier of the Ordre National du Mérite, chevalier des Palmes Académiques, the Gapper Book Prize (2006), the Prix du Québec (1992 and 2006), the NUI, Galway President’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2007-2008) and election to membership of the Royal Irish Academy.
