Guideline for communication in cross cultural general practice consultationsMs. Mary O’Reilly-de Brún, Senior Researcher in the Discipline of General Practice, School of Medicine, NUI Galway worked with project lead Anne MacFarlane, Professor of Primary Healthcare Research, University of Limerick and colleagues in the Health Service Executive National Social Inclusion Unit and the Centre for Participatory Strategies, Galway to produce a guideline to support communication in general practice consultations with migrants who have limited English language skills. A key finding from this extensive, participatory research process is that the recommended best practice is to use a trained, accredited interpreter (rather than a family member of friend as an interpreter) or to consult with a general practitioner who has fluency in the language of the service user.

Communication in Cross-Cultural General Practice Consultations: Involving Ethnic Minority Service UsersThe Discipline of General Practice ran a very successful fieldwork day with ethnic minority service users at NUI Galway on 17th April 2010.
|
The aim of this day was to give ethnic minority service users the opportunity to ’voice’ their experiences and opinions about communication in cross-cultural general practice consultations. Forty one participants from Polish speaking, Russian speaking, Portuguese speaking, French Congolese speaking and Nigerian communities generated data with representatives from their own communities (peer researchers) who had been trained to use participatory learning and action research methods. Research findings will be used to develop guidelines for communication in cross-cultural general practice consultations This research is funded by a HRB Partnership Award involving the Discipline of General Practice and the Centre for Participatory Strategies

Secondary prevention of heart disease in general practice: a cluster randomised controlled trial of tailored practice and patient care plansThis study clearly shows that providing additional care in general practice to patients with established heart disease is very worthwhile. It is the first study to definitively show that such programmes reduce both total and cardiovascular related hospital admissions. This is of crucial importance today where hospitals are under such pressure regarding what patients to admit. It also represents the largest non-pharmaceutical study ever performed on the island of Ireland. Unfortunately, only 20% of Irish patients have access to such care through a HSE funded programme called ’Heartwatch’. It was established as a pilot in 2003 for 20% of practices and the intention was to extend, after evaluation and revision, nationwide. A decision on whether or not to extend has still not been taken.
