Kim Kavanagh graduated from Medicine in UCC in 2002. She spent a year working in Australia before starting the Western Specialist Training Programme in General Practice, which she completed in March 2009. Her area of research interest during training was primarily in Rotavirus infection, specifically the clinical spectrum, epidemiology and cost of hospital admissions attributed to same, and she has presented her findings at several national conferences in 2008. Clinical interests include Dermatology, and she obtained a Diploma in Practical Dermatology through Cardiff University in 2009.
She is currently employed by the ICGP as Senior Registrar in General Practice, which entails a commitments in research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with the Department of General Practice at NUIG, as well as GP clinical work in Galway.
