MA Dissertation Handbook
The dissertation is the final module in the MA programme. It aims to allow students critically to practice skills acquired through the first two semesters while organising and executing a research project designed in co-operation with a designated supervisor and possibly involving NUI Galway's dedicated CKI programme.
Through the provision of dedicated research support workshops and individual research supervision, the module aims to anchor a series of research competencies:
Continuous assessment (100%)
Dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words
At the end of the academic year, each student will be asked to prepare a poster presentation based on her/his MA dissertation research for the Annual Symposium in Environment, Society and Development. A postgraduate paper session will also take place during the 1-day symposium so students will also have the opportunity of presenting their work in a conference-like environment. For 2010-2011, we are delighted to have Mark Duffield, Professor of Development Politics at the University of Bristol. City University of New York, as our plenary speaker. Other speakers on the day will include, Neil Smith, Distinguished Professor of Geography and Anthropology at City University of New York. Neil is also external examiner for the MA, which is a big endorsement of the reputation of our programme.
