Working Title

Marine Spatial Planning in the Irish Context: Towards best practice in integrated maritime governance and stakeholder consultation

Research Description 

The marine environment is coming under increasing pressure from new developments, such as the drive towards the use of renewable energy sources, while at the same time trying to accommodate traditional marine activities, such as fishing. The sectoral approach, used until now to regulate access to marine resources, is no longer adequate as it fails to satisfactorily resolve user conflict or ensure the sustainable development of marine resources. The relatively new concept of marine spatial planning has been presented as the most viable system for managing development of marine resources in a holistic fashion. This research project will investigate the collaborative planning process, which is viewed as a key element of the marine spatial planning process, and devise planning methodologies that provide for optimal levels of stakeholder participation consistent with effective and inclusive decision-making with respect to the mobilisation and sustainable development of marine resources.
