Biography
Nessa graduated with an honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and Psychological Studies from the University of Ireland, Galway, in 2009. Growing up in the countryside in Sligo left her with a lifelong interest in the environment. Completing her third year dissertation in the area of heavy metal contamination furthered this interest in the environment and in particular, soil quality.
Research Interests
Nessa is particularly interested in Physical Geography. Her area of study is soil quality, with an emphasis on soil contamination. As part of her undergraduate degree, Nessa studied Statistics and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), which form a major part of her research into soil quality issues.
Current Research
Assessment of heavy metal contamination in soils using GIS and spatial analysis.
1. Investigating the magnetic susceptibility of soils in relation to heavy metal contamination at South Park, Galway;
2. Identification of heavy metal contamination in soils of grazing land in the townland of Dunbeakin, Dromore West, County Sligo, Ireland using an XRF analyser, advanced geostatistical analysis and mapping using GIS and
3. Identification of heavy metal contamination in soils of a bonfire site in the townland of Dunowla, Templeboy, County Sligo, Ireland using an XRF analyser , advance geostatistical analysis and mapping using GIS.
Other Research Interest:
Interaction of soil hydrology, land use and climate change and their impact on soil quality
Nessa is currently evolved in the SoilH Project conducted by EPA and she hopes to engage GIS skills to analyse the five threats to Irish soil, which are erosion, compaction, surface sealing, loss of organic matter and in particular, she will focus on landslides. In carrying out this research, Nessa will study the parameters of landslides and develop a landslide susceptibility map of Ireland using GIS.
