GRADUATE RESEARCH DEGREES IN GEOGRAPHY
Introduction
Geography offers research-based graduate degrees across a wide range of research fields spanning both physical and human geography. There are two types of research degree: an MLitt and a PhD. The MLitt is completed on a two-year full-time basis. From the start of the 2009/2010 academic year, the PhD moves to a four-year, structured programme as the preferred option, although a three-year programme also remains in place in the immediate term (fees for the four-year and three-year programmes amount to the same overall total). Part-time options are available for both the MLitt and PhD.
Entry requirements
Submission of a structured research proposal is a requirement for application to our MLitt and PhD programmes. Proposals and a CV should be sent to the Director for Graduate Studies (see also
Research Proposal). Decisions on applications are made by Geography’s Graduate Committee.
We recommend that you make contact with the Director for Graduate Studies prior to submitting your research project. He will be pleased to provide you with whatever advice possible in formulating your project and in identifying potential supervisors - whose area of academic interest most closely relates to your own proposed research. Establishing a good two-way working environment at an early stage is critical to the success of a project. Details of all staff members are to be found on our webpages.
For entry to the MLitt, candidates should have obtained a Second Class Honours degree, Grade 1 overall, with a 2.1 minimum in Geography. For entry to the PhD programme, candidates should normally have an Upper Second Class Honours Degree, Grade 1 overall. PhD applicants are also required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.
Applications are then made online via The Postgraduate Applications Centre (
PAC ). Applications via the PAC system should
NOT be made before a decision has been reached on the proposal by Geography's Graduate Committee. Students are also advised to check for further details on the
NUIG Graduate Admissions page.
