Biography
Claire McLoughlin graduated with a first class honours degree in Geography from University College Dublin in 2003. From there she progressed into postgraduate education in UCD where she obtained a M.A. in Geographical Analysis in 2004. She participated in a research expedition to the Norwegian Arctic in 2005 which fuelled her interest in glacial environments.
Research Interests
Claire’s main interests lie in reconstructing the deglaciation history of ice sheets and quantifying the effects of glaciers and ice sheets on the landscape. Since 2006, Claire has been investigating the sedimentological and morphological evidence related to the pattern of glaciation in northwest Donegal by the last Irish Ice Sheet as part of her Ph.D. The aim of the research is to improve reconstructions of the Late Midlandian glacial history of northwest Donegal thereby enhancing our understanding of the nature and timing of ice sheet build-up in the Donegal Highlands. Her research incorporates the application of both traditional methods of field surveying (geomorphological mapping and sedimentary facies analysis) coupled with new innovative Quaternary dating methods (Cosmogenic surface exposure dating). Claire is an active member of the Quaternary Research Association, International Association of Sedimentologists, British Society for Geomorphology, Irish Geographical Society and Irish Quaternary Association where she was postgraduate representative from 2006-2007.
