Applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates for a three-year PhD research studentship, based in Geography (School of Geography and Archaeology) and the Irish Centre for Rural Transformation and Sustainability (ICERTS) at the National University of Ireland, Galway and funded through the HEA 4th Programme of Research for Third Level Institutions (PRTLI IV).
The project is developed against the background of the increased attention given to the sustainability of economic, socio-cultural and environmental systems in contemporary rural development policy. Tourism is often proposed as having an important role to play in these contexts. The proposed research will explore the concepts of embeddedness in the local resource base and appropriate forms of dis-embeddedness as strategies for developing rural tourism, within the context of the sustainability of the wider rural system. A model will be developed from academic literature and then explored through empirical research in a selected area or areas in Ireland.
It is expected that the successful candidate will have a first class or high upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in Geography, Economics or Sociology, preferably with a master’s qualification in the area of tourism. S/he will be based at NUI, Galway.
Stipend: €16,000 in addition to fees.
