Micheál’s main research interests relate to sustainable local and regional development. Strategies that are effective in promoting self-reliant approaches to sustainable development are of special interest to him. Governance, as a critical factor in local development, is a particular focus of his current research. He has recently written several papers for the OECD on this topic. He has worked closely with various development organisations throughout Europe and has published extensively on matters germane to local and regional development. He has attracted considerable research funding. Major projects include:
(i) GIS applications in local and regional development (Terra Programme, EC).
(ii) Strategic regional and local development planning through GIS (NASC).
(iii) An Ghaeilge sa Ghaeltacht – tionchar eagraíochtaí (Coimisiún na Gaeltachta)
(iv) Principles and Practices of Sustainable Local Development (EPA)
(v) Landscape Heritage Sustainable Development Indicator Assessment Using GIS (EPA)
(vi) Management and Prevention of coastal risks (INTERREG-IVB, EC)
