EU Framework 7 Programme

Member of the Irish team (along with Dr. John McDonagh and Dr. Maura Farrell) based in the School of Geography & Archaeology, undertaking research under FP7.  ’DERREG’- (Developing Europe’s Rural Regions in the Era of Globalization) comprises 8 other EU partners.  The project commenced in January, 2009, and runs for a 3 year period.  It has been awarded EU funding of €1.5 million.  The aim of the project is to develop an innovative, interpretative model of research that integrates scientific analysis across a number of key sectors and processes, coupled with a strong emphasis on practical application, to enable rural areas meet the challenges of globalization. 

Urban-rural fringe

Other research interests relate to the geography of social change in the urban-rural fringe in Ireland, how such changes are experienced by local populations, and how they impact upon place meaning and a sense of local identity, particularly in the context of increasing urbanisation of the countryside.  More recent research has examined current management practices in private housing estates in Ireland, and the wider implications for local participatory democracy, civic engagement and social capital development.
