FRAMEWORK 7: Developing Europe’s Rural Regions in the Era of Globalization – An interpretative model for better anticipating and responding to challenges for regional development in an evolving international context (DERREG).
John, along with his colleagues
Dr Marie Mahon and
Dr Maura Farrell (both from the Geography Department at NUI, Galway) form the Irish Partner in this European Union Seventh Framework Programme. The project, with nine partners in total, is funded by the European Union Socio-economic Science and Humanities, and is one of three projects that were selected from 425 submissions. DERREG’s key aim is to produce an interpretative model that will enable researchers and regional development actors to better anticipate and respond to the key challenges posed by globalization for rural regions. Strategy for Integrated Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas in CEE Countries.
This 5th Framework project was undertaken with the Economics Dept NUI,G and Universities in Germany, London, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary). This research involved assisting integration of the first ’wave’ of CEEC’s rural areas into the EU by (1) identifying optimum rural development measures and supporting institutional structures and drawing on policy recommendations for the CEEC that reflect their specific conditions; (2) identifying key factors shaping farm diversification in CEEC rural areas and drawing strategies to enhance the role of farm and income diversification for rural development purposes; (3) developing a simulation model for the CEEC that allows estimation of the impact of alternative policy scenarios on production, consumption, net trade, income and budget costs, and (4) enhancing co-operation between EU and CEEC researchers and transfer of know-how to the CEEC.
Environmental Transport Policies and Rural Development in Europe.
This research project was funded under the
FAIR programme, and was undertaken with partners from Aberdeen University (co-ordinator), Germany, Greece, Sweden and Finland. The overall aim was to produce a research methodology to allow the identification and assessment of the conflicts and synergies which may exist between environmental transport policies and policies fro rural development. As part of the process, the research also produced policy recommendations that should be useful in dealing with policy conflicts leading to a greater degree of social, economic and environmental sustainability for rural societies in the EU.
