Biography

Born in Germany, Ulf has always taken Geography to imply a license to travel and to explore. He has studied in Germany, Sweden, the United States and France and came to Geography in Galway early in 2001 from the University of Wales at Lampeter. Ulf was Head of the Department for 9 years before becoming Head of the newly formed School of Geography & Archaeology in 2009. His main research interests are aligned with, but also exceed, those formulated within the “Planning & Sustainability” research cluster; they are centered around the following research foci: Geographical theory in the social sciences; Social Philosophies; the history of geographical inquiry in Europe; and Cultural geography of modernity in Europe. Currently, Ulf is supervising graduate projects on sustainable manners of living and constructing communities, niche tourism and the contribution of architecture to the construction of national identities. His own work is currently attaching to research into the relationship between the built environment and civil society, the historical geographies of co-operative building practices in Europe from the 1920s onwards and to failed epistemologies.
