Biography

Dr. Chaosheng Zhang is head of GIS Centre, Ryan Institute, National University of Ireland, Galway. He teaches Geographic Information System (GIS) and statistics courses at School of Geography and Archaeology of the University. Dr. Zhang¡¦s academic background covers both GIS and environmental geochemistry. His research interest focuses on spatial analyses of environmental variables, especially heavy metals in soils and soil organic carbon, using GIS, geostatistics and other spatial statistical techniques. One of the current research directions of Dr. Zhang is spatial analyses of environment and health. Dr. Zhang has published more than 70 peer-reviewed papers.

Dr. Zhang has strong international research experience in China, Sweden, USA, Australia, Jamaica and Ireland. Dr. Zhang is chair and organizer of two internationally leading conferences in environment and health SEGH 2010 International Conference and Workshops on Environmental Quality and Human Health; SESEH 2012 Sino-European Symposium on Environment and Health

Some specific topics of research interest

Using the idea of ¡§robust-symmetric¡¨ mean to calculate the most representative mean values of datasets which are not normally distributed and have outliers;

Using neural networks to identify ¡§relationship outliers¡¨ for database quality control;

Detection of ¡§spatial outliers¡¨ in order to obtain robust spatial structure in geostatistics;

Using geostatistics and GIS to study spatio-temporal changes;

Using geostatistics and GIS to produce uncertainty and probability maps for risk assessment.
