Third year geography allows students to become further immersed in the process of enquiry and discovery by seeking to analyse many of the key relationships between humans and the environment, to consider their multiple spatial interactions, and more broadly to understand how geographical research and knowledge is theorized, produced and actioned. To further these aspirations there are a range of Human and Physical Geography courses on offer which develop specific skill sets, critical knowledges and engagement with contemporary geographical theories and debates. Students choose from a menu of optional courses with one of the most exciting parts of third year being the opportunity to engage in an original piece of research in the form of a final year dissertation. This significant project is intended to develop critical analytical and presentational skills and allow students the scope and responsibility of designing and executing research with the help of their supervisor. In producing an original piece of work on a clearly defined topic - formulating research objectives, designing a research programme, executing field, laboratory or archival work, and writing-up the results - students are able to draw upon, and develop, a range of practical and academic skills; many of which are of great value in future careers and applying for jobs. |
