TI 224 Residential Field Class

TI 224 Residential Field Course (5 ECTS)

The Algarve, Portugal 5 – 11 April, 2013

Course rationale:

This course will enable students to synthesise theoretical and practical elements in a range of field-based and ’real world’ contexts. After training in a number of geographical field-based skills and techniques before departure students will be expected to lead the field work upon arriving in The Algarve. The degree to which students engage in the material during the semester leading up to the field course will determine the success of the course. The field course is not site-specific; geographical and personal skills developed by the student are directly transferable to other locations.

Aims:

Extend the learning environment of students through direct transfer and application of a range of geographical theoretical and technical approaches to human-environmental systems
Develop students' knowledge and understanding of selected field-based methodologies and techniques
Develop students' competences to undertake and manage self-directed research and learning

Assessment:

Written report and presentations (completed in Portugal) 70%
Written report and attendance (completed before departure) 30%

Commitment:

Two hours per week every second week of the semester
Seven-day field course: Two days travel, 4½ days work

Registration for course:

Sign up list in Dr Siubhán Comer’s office. The course is limited to 45 students, therefore the first 45 students to sign up and pay will be registered for the course. Dr Comer will also need a copy of passport. (The course needs to reach the 45 quota (of fully paid students) for it to go ahead)
