Based on the basic concepts and simple applications of GIS that were covered in the course “Introduction to GIS”, this course focuses on the advanced topics and advanced functions of GIS, which are more practical. The concepts of advanced analysis functions of network analysis and spatial interpolation are explained, and topics of data quality, uncertainty and errors, Google Earth are discussed. Students will understand the latest development of these advanced GIS topics.
The extensions of ArcView 3.3 are selected as the software package for this course, and MapInfo Professional 9.5 and ArcGIS 9.3 are introduced. Students will acquire the useful techniques of making more practical maps and performing advanced analyses through the computer practical classes.

It is required that “Introduction to GIS” course be completed prior to taking “Advanced GIS” course. Previous computer skills are not required. Those who have interest in computer are welcome to take this course!
12 hours lecture, 12 hours computer practical (One hour each per week)
Tutorial (Extra hours for finishing assignment will be provided).
Due to the rapid development of GIS, the contents for this course will be selected from the Internet. Students are encouraged to visit these websites to keep their knowledge updated. Specific website addresses on each topic will be provided during the lectures. Meanwhile, some materials are also provided on NUI, Galway intranet: Q-DriveGeographyZhangAdvanced_GIS
* Three assignments 75% (25% each)
* One essay 25%
There is no final exam for this course. All the marks will be given based on continuous assessment of the assignments and essay.
The assignments are designed to help students to understand the concepts and get familiar with the GIS software packages, and must be submitted on time.
The essay is to write a paper of 1500-2000 words, discussing any topic in GIS. The topics may be: Applications of GIS in (your chosen field); GIS in Ireland/Europe; Latest development of GIS; GPS. Please choose a specific topic you are most interested in, discuss and critically analyse it in detail.
