This subject is aimed at those students who have taken German for Leaving Certificate and who wish to further their knowledge of the language within the context of their legal studies.
The course adopts an integrated approach, discussing themes that complement the core law and business subjects in each year of the Bachelor of Corporate Law programme.
Course Aims
Language Skills • Developing the ability to express ideas and argue convincingly in oral and written German
- Analysis of authentic texts that thematise contemporary social, legal, political and economic issues
- Expansion of vocabulary, in particular the acquisition of legal and business terminology
Cultural Competence
- Familiarisation with the social, legal, political and economic institutions of the German-speaking countries
- Introduction to post-war German history
- Analysis of literary texts, considering, in particular, their sociohistorical context and legal themes
Learning Methods
The programme actively engages students in the learning process, encouraging participation from the outset. Role-plays, group discussions and presentations facilitate debate.
The multimedia laboratory provides access to internet resources and to multimedia language applications (
Einblicke,
Geschichte der Deutschen).
Materials
The extensive use of authentic materials, such as newspaper and magazine articles, ensures the contemporary focus of the curriculum.

Course Design
GR 106
- The first year course is designed to consolidate and develop existing language skills.
- Students discuss aspects of German culture and society, such as young people in Germany, working in Germany and multiculturalism.
- Students are introduced to aspects of the German legal system, including legal education, the organs of state, the Constitution and Contract Law, thereby complementing Irish Legal Systems and Contract, which are core components of the First Year Bachelor of Corporate Law course.
- Significant dates in post-war German history are discussed.
GR 208
- The acquisition of a specialised commercial vocabulary is an important aspect of the second year language course as Company Law and Commercial Law are compulsory subjects on the Second Year Bachelor of Corporate Law programme. Topics include trade fairs, the structure of companies, a description of their products and company profiles.
- Regular sessions in the multimedia laboratory enable students to access internet resources and multimedia language applications.
- Students are introduced to the
Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch, the Civil Code that forms the core of the German legal system.
EU Law forms an integral part of the Second Year Bachelor of Corporate Law course. Consequently, Legal German students discuss the development of the European Union, EU institutions and the expansion of Europe.
• A literature seminar introduces students to analysis of selected literary texts.
• Preparation begins for the year in Germany.
Scholarships
Second Year students may apply to the German Academic Exchange Service for a summer scholarship in Germany.
Year Abroad
Following completion of the second year, students may spend two semesters studying law and language at the partner universities of Würzburg or Göttingen.
GR 317
- In the final year particular emphasis is placed on the ability to express ideas convincingly. Regular assignments and a presentation facilitate the development of opinions on contemporary legal, social, political and economic issues.
- Legal themes include German legal history, the Constitution, the court system, I.T. Law, the federal state, and Labour Law.
- German Unification is an important theme on the final year course. Students are required to write an essay on the transformation of Berlin since unification.
