Dearcadh: Graduate Journal

Dearcadh: Graduate Journal of Gender, Globalisation and Rights

‘Dearcadh’ is the Irish language word for ‘view point’. This journal provides a forum for graduate students to express their point of view, through the publication of articles founded on quality research and academic engagement. The motivation for the journal arose through the recognition of the potential contributions to the field of knowledge that emerge through MA dissertations and exceptional essays, and early career research that, due to the challenges of academic publishing, may never be publicly accessible. Dearcadh: Graduate Journal of Gender, Globalisation and Rights aims to address this gap through the provision of an open-access, peer reviewed journal for graduate students and early career researchers.

The journal’s mission is to share the diversity and innovation of research emerging from the Centre for Global Women’s Studies at NUI Galway and to contribute towards discourse on intersecting issues of gender, globalisation and human rights. On an annual basis, it publishes peer reviewed research and review articles by students and graduates that address the themes of gender, globalisation and/or Human Rights.

Who can publish with Dearcadh?

The journal has been developed with students and graduates of the MA Gender, Globalisation and Rights programme at NUI Galway as the main authors and journal beneficiaries. However, from Volume 2 (due for publication March, 2021) graduates of other MA programmes, PhD students and early career researchers will be able to submit articles to the journal for consideration. There are no disciplinary, geographical or other restrictions on authors, but all articles must engage with gender and one of the other two key themes of the journal – globalisation and human rights.

Why publish with Dearcadh?

The journal acts as a showcase of the wide range of research being carried out in the MA programme, and gives students the opportunity to bring their work to a publishable standard and to disseminate it to interested audiences. All submissions will undergo a review process with constructive feedback returned to authors. Students and early career researchers can develop skills in academic publishing and learn from the review, editorial and publication process. Such skills support the academic and professional development of authors.

As an on-line, open-access journal, articles are easily discoverable through search engines such as Google. This increases the reach of articles published in the journal.

Who should read Dearcadh?

The journal’s intended audience includes academic researchers; practitioners in the fields of social justice, human rights and gender equality; policy makers and the broader community of interest in gender and rights. Dearcadh profiles the insight and concerns of the emerging generation of feminist researchers. It is a valuable source of new and original thinking on a wide range of essential topics.
