This is a programme jointly delivered by NUI, Galway and Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT). The first semester takes place in NUI, Galway and consists of lectures in the fundamentals of Pharmaoclogy and Toxicology, as well as applied aspects of these disciplines which are delivered by means of workshops, laboratory practicals, data handling and experimental design exercises. The second semester takes place in AIT and consists of lectures in advanced topics such as in vitro models of Target Organ Toxicity, Toxicokinetics and Reproductive Toxicology. In addition, there is an opportunity to investigate an aspect of toxiciology and deliver a seminar on this area. A research project begins in May, which can be located either at NUI Galway, AIT, or in an appropriate industrial location.

The MSc programme is open to students who have obtained at least a second class honours degree in a suitable undergraduate discipline, or a pass degree and three years relevant work experience. Students will be jointly registered at AIT and NUI, Galway and normally will graduate from the institution to which they made their application.
Selection is based on the candidate's undergraduate marks, as well as their aptitude for the programme following interview.
Written examinations will take place at the end of the both Semesters 1 and 2. The project work is assessed at the end of the academic year.
Graduates of this programme will be equipped with a range of skills necessary to embark on a career in Toxicology, either within industry, academia or in governmental and international Regulatory Bodies or proceeding into a PhD programme.
