Title Work-based Placement 1

5 ECTS

Module description

Students may have an opportunity to visit an appropriate workplace outside NUI Galway to gain work-related research experience. Such opportunities are limited and are only possible when arranged by the student’s supervisor and agreed with the host organisation. It is recommended that a supervisor in the host organisation is involved in planning the specific learning outcomes for the student along with the student’s NUI Galway supervisor. These learning outcomes must be appropriate to the period of the work-based placement. A reflective journal should be maintained by the student to record their learning experience on this module. The student’s experience must be described in a written report and in an oral presentation in the host organisation and/or a NUI Galway audience on their return (within two months). It is also expected that the supervisor in the host organisation will report to the NUI Galway supervisor on the student’s activities during the placement. The minimum placement period is one month.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the new knowledge, skills and perspectives gained from their experience in the workplace.
  2. Demonstrate ability to solve problems and carry out research in a work environment.
  3. Write a comprehensive report describing their achievements during this placement.
  4. Present orally their work-based experience to an audience in the host organisation and/or a local audience.
