Module Description: |
This module on Research Integrity will ensure participants are aware of the importance of responsible behavior as a fundamental component of quality research. The module covers issues surrounding research integrity from the planning stages, to conducting experiments and reporting of results. Topics such as plagiarism, authorship, proper data collection and storage, data analysis, data ownership as well as the responsibilities involved in working with animal /human subjects will be covered. Participants will be required to complete an assignment including a Research Student- Supervisor Agreement to be signed by their supervisor as well as to attend an online interactive workshop. This initiative in Research Integrity training for post-graduate students was pioneered by The Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM). To achieve 5ECTS credits the student must complete all of the following mandatory components: 1. Attendance at workshop, 2. Completion of online Epigeum course, 3. Completion of assignment, 4. The supervisor must approve and sign the Research Student- Supervisor Agreement. Results to be recorded on a Pass/Fail basis, with a Pass mark of 40%. Each student may only receive credit for this module once. |

Indicative Content |
Research Integrity This module in Research Integrity will ensure researchers understand their professional responsibilities. It provides practical advice on dealing with the complex issues that can arise while planning, conducting and reporting research. The online course is provided by Epigeum and is made up of 8 sections: Good Research Conduct, Irresponsible Research Practices, Planning Your Research, Managing and Recording Your Research, Data Selection, Analysis and Presentation, Scholarly Publication, Professional Responsibilities and Communication and Social Responsibility. Each section has an associated MCQ, all of which must be passed (>80%) to achieve an overall certificate of completion. |

Students must attend a 2 hour virtual workshop covering details on NUI Galway specific policies & procedures in relation to research integrity. The workshop includes an interactive discussion of good research practice, questionable research practices and research misconduct.
