Prospective research degree applicants should refer the websites of the different research centres based at NUI Galway. Canadian students applying to a doctoral program in the social sciences and humanities or registered full-time in the first or second year of such a program at this university are invited to submit their application through this institution. In addition, non-Canadian students applying to a doctoral program at a Canadian university might also be eligible for application.
Up to fifteen (15) Trudeau Scholarships are awarded each year to support doctoral candidates pursuing research into compelling present-day concerns. Each scholarship is valued at $40,000 per year for three years, plus up to an additional $20,000 annually to support research-related travel. Trudeau Scholars are each paired with a Trudeau Mentor, an outstanding professional who pursues policy analysis and implementation in his or her daily work.
The Trudeau Foundation seeks to support doctoral candidates pursuing research on one or more of the Foundation's four themes: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment.
Candidates are evaluated based on their academic achievement, ability to engage in lively exchange with other researchers and scholars, and intention to work in an area related to one or more of the four themes of the Foundation. Finally, they must have an expressed desire to contribute to public dialogue.

The Foundation strongly encourages universities to consider submitting a slate of nominees that includes Canadian students from the fnll range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. In the past, Trudeau Scholars have included students studying communications, criminology, environmental sciences, history, law, literature, management sciences, philosophy, political science, social service, and sociology, as well as many other disciplines in the arts.

2012 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS- DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIPS APPLICATION GUIDELINES
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
• Be a Canadian citizen applying to a doctoral program in the social sciences and humanities or
registered full-time in the first or second year of such a program at a foreign university
OR
• Be a foreign national [with a preference for candidates from the developing world] applying to a doctoral program in the social sciences and humanities or registered full-time in the first or second year of such a program at a Canadian University
• Present a research project linked to one of the four themes of the Foundation
• Be nominated by a university
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

• Letter of nomination signed by a high-ranking official of the institution
• Three letters of reference: two (2) from academic referees, principally concerning academic achievements, AND one (1) from a non-academic referee, concerning the non-academic aspects of the application. SUBMIT AN APPLICATION THROUGH A FOREIGN UNIVERSITY
Universities can nominate a candidate from their institution who is pursuing doctoral studies at another
university. Foreign universities can propose up to eight candidates per institution, including affiliated schools and colleges. Letters of nomination must be signed by a high-ranking official of the institution. In requesting a nomination from a foreign university, candidates should provide the nominating authority with their completed application form and all supporting documents. These must be submitted to the Foundation by the nominating authority of the foreign university. A complete application file must be submitted for each student.

The Structured PhD Programme in Simulation Science is a new multi-institutional collaborative Ph.D. programme involving University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, Queen’s University Belfast, National University of Ireland Galway and is supported by the Irish Centre for High End Computing. Funded PhD Fellowships are currently available at NUI Galway in this programme. These SimSci Fellowships are fully funded for 4 years and include a stipend of 16,000 Euro per year together with an allowance for research travel and expenses and cover fees for EU students. The SimSci Fellowships are funded under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) Cycle 5 which is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This PhD studentship proposes a research project which takes a systems biology approach to understanding and predicting patient outcomes. This project is embedded in the research aims of the Prostate Cancer Institute at NUI Galway. Namely understanding what are the key differences in tumour biology from one patient to the next that affects the individual patient’s response to therapy and ultimately their disease outcome. The ESB have agreed to fund the establishment of the Dr. Paddy Moriarty Fund in memory of the former Chief Executive and Cathaoirleach of the ESB. The Fund will support three postgraduate fellowships, with a preference for PhD Programmes, although Masters Degree support would not be ruled out, to be known as the Paddy Moriarty Fellowships, in the amount of 20,000 per annum for the next ten years. The Fellowships will be tenable in Engineering, Quality, Innovation, Labour Economics/Labour Law/Industrial Relations, or Irish Studies (including Gaeilge), preference to be given in the first year to a PhD student in Electrical Engineering. One new award will be made each year and, in steady state, three such fellowships will be supported at any given time. In addition, support from the Fund will be given to Irish arts activities in the University, in the amount of €12,000 per annum.
Each Scholarship will be for a maximum amount of €12,000 per annum for three years leading to the degree of PhD in Women’s Studies. Broad research areas within Women’s Studies include: Women’s Creative Practices; Irish Women’s Writing and Literary History; Feminist Literary/Theory; comparative women’s creative practices; women and Irish-Australia. This Scholarship is endowed by the late John F. Keenan, B.A., M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. (a graduate of the University 1892-1897), who by his Will bequeathed to the University certain portions of his estate for the promotion of Medical Research. The original Endowment, as ascertained by the Executors of the donor on the seventh day of March, 1947, consisted of securities and cash valued at €7063 (approx.). The present value of the Scholarship is €12,500.
Údarás na hOllscoile, having accepted the Bequest has founded the above Scholarship, and has adopted the following rules in regard to it:—
The Scholarship is available to a graduate in Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of either sex of Irish parentage, who has:—
(a) obtained Honours in the M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. Examination;
(b) presented for the M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. Examination not later than the month of December in the sixth year of medical study;
(c) been adjudged by the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences to have attained an adequate Honours Standard in the undergraduate course as a whole;
(d) been adjudged by the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences to have shown special aptitude for research during the undergraduate course.
Note: For the purpose of (b) above there shall not be counted:
(i) an extra year spent in taking a Medical B.Sc. Degree;
The Scholarship shall be awarded by Údarás na hOllscoile on the recommendation of the Academic Council made after consultation with the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. The College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences shall, for the purpose, consider the report of the Professor of Medicine and of the Extern Examiner in Medicine. Údarás na hOllscoile may withhold the Scholarship if sufficient merit be not shown.
(a) The Scholarship shall be awarded once only in every four years, shall be awarded in the month of January, and was first awarded in January, 1951;
(b) If the Scholarship be not awarded in the official year of award, it may be awarded in any one of the three succeeding years of a four-year period;
Only Graduates in Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences of the four years preceding the first day of January of the year of award, are eligible for the Scholarship.
The Candidate to whom the Scholarship is awarded shall before being permitted to take up the Scholarship first serve as a House Physician in a Recognised General Hospital for a period of not less than six months or more than twelve months, unless he/she has already done so. He/she shall then pursue a Course of Research in Medicine and Health Sciences at some centre abroad approved by the Professor of Medicine in the University.
The Scholarship is tenable by the Scholar for a period of two consecutive years. The said two-year period shall commence from the day of termination of period of service as House Physician or (in the case of a candidate who has already served as House Physician) from the date of award of the Scholarship. The Scholarship shall in the first instance be awarded for one year only, but may be continued by Údarás na hOllscoile for a second year on the recommendation of the Academic Council. Before making such recommendation, the Academic Council must be satisfied of the progress of the scholar and shall consider the report of the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and the report of the Head of the Research School in which the Scholar is engaged.
Candidates shall lodge their applications for the Scholarship with the Admissions Office of the University not later than the first day of December of the year immediately preceding the year of award.
The Scholarship will be paid in equal half-yearly instalments. The first instalment will be paid on receipt of official notification from a Research Centre abroad to the effect that the Scholar has commenced work there.

A doctoral Fellowship in honour of Michael Davitt, the founder of the Land League, was established by the University in 1997-8. The Fellowship, to support doctoral research on different aspects of the life and work of Michael Davitt, and on areas of academic enquiry relating thereto, is financially supported by An Roinn Oideachais agus Eolaíochta. In the arrangements for awarding the Davitt doctoral Fellowship, the University proposes to acknowledge the special interest in the legacy of Davitt of the Trustees of the Michael Davitt Museum Association.
The areas of proposed research which will be recognised as appropriate for the award of the Davitt doctoral Fellowship will, in the first instance, relate to the academic disciplines of History and Politics. While the initial Fellowship was awarded for research on some aspect of the latter part of Davitt’s career, thereafter, it will be open to the Fellowship board to advise the University on any particular areas of research which might be attached to the award of the Fellowship from time to time. The areas of proposed research which will be recognised as appropriate for the award of the next Davitt doctoral Fellowship are: research on socioeconomic or cultural change in the West of Ireland, from a social science or historical or economic perspective; a study of a West of Ireland community from an anthropological point of view; a study, from the economic, sociological or historical point of view, of the literature of planned interventions in regard to community or rural development in the West of Ireland, in terms of development strategies or specific development programmes.
The Fellowship will comprise a maintenance grant* of the value of the maximum payable to holders of Local Authority Higher Education Grants, together with remission of tuition fees for the Ph.D degree course. The maintenance grant will be payable in three equal instalments, following confirmation of registration. The Fellowship will be tenable for three years, subject to satisfactory progress throughout the tenure of the award.
