The Prize has been made possible by a generous donation by Phelan Conan Limited who have a long association with the University and are the supplier of academic robes for all graduation ceremonies. The Prize will be awarded annually for a distinguished publication, in the form of a book, monograph or essay on the Irish language, Irish folklore or the history of the Irish language, by a postgraduate student of the University.
The value of the prize is €500.
The University participates in a scheme introduced by the RTE Authority in 1989 for the award of Scholarships to candidates who will undertake research, at Masters or PhD level, into the social impact of broadcasting. Further information may be obtained from the Admissions Office.
A scholarship of €1000 ($1,500) (which commenced in 2007) will be available annually to enable a postgraduate student of History from NUI Galway to attend an annual conference in Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The recipient will be selected by an academic panel at NUI Galway.

The Research Scholarship is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Professor of Civil Engineering after consultation with representatives of the donor company. The Research Scholarship is available only to a graduate registering for a higher degree in Engineering and undertaking research work in Civil Engineering. The Scholarship, valued at €1,270, is intended to help to defray travel and other costs incurred by the candidate in the pursuit of his/her research.
This Scholarship has been endowed by Agfa-Gevaert (Ireland) Limited and is awarded annually to enable a young Galway Graduate to pursue a short course of study or research abroad, as part of his/her postgraduate training in Radiology. Graduates of NUI Galway, up to 10 years after graduation, are eligible for this award, which will be decided by a University Committee representative of the Medical, Nursing and Health Sciences College. In the event of a suitable applicant not being available in any year, the interest available may be carried over to augment the funds available in the subsequent year. The value of the Scholarship is €1,200.
Ethicon Limited have agreed to award a sum of approximately €777 (£500 sterling) per annum over the next five years to help fund a short course abroad for a postgraduate trainee in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, to be known as "The Professorial Postgraduate Travel Prize".
The NUI Galway International Scholarship Programme provides a number of postgraduate scholarships for outstanding students from South Africa, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia who would otherwise be unable to finance their studies in Ireland. Priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate that the knowledge they acquire from their studies will be utilised subsequently to support development in the students’ home countries. The scholarship amount will be up to €15,000 for one academic year towards the cost of travel and accommodation. In addition, relevant tuition fees will be awarded by NUI Galway. Selection criteria will be based on academic merit and financial need. There is no postgraduate application fee required from qualifying applicants for the Scholarship Programme (Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, South Africa). Applications are made directly to the International Affairs Office. Calls for applications are made on the International Affairs Office website each Spring.
