Thesis Title: Microsurgical Applications of Photochemical Tissue Bonding
Summary: The thesis comprises of a large body of work with notable experiments on photochemical tissue bonding in nerve and vessel repair in a rat model carried out at Harvard University Medical School by Ms Anne O'Neill. The project has already lead to three published papers with a fourth paper and two review articles currently under review.
The project utilises the novel combination of 532nm wavelength YAG laser and rose Bengal staining to allow covalent bonding of tissue. Having demonstrated that this combination works, it concentrates on the validation of the technique in nerve and vascular repair in the microsurgical setting. Future direction will allow assessment of this combination with a compatible internal stent.
