Irish Centre for Human Rights
Huston School of Film and Digital Media
The College of Arts, Social Sciences, & Celtic Studies is the largest academic community within the university. NUI Galway has a strong research ethos in the Humanities, which concentrates on established areas of excellence, fosters new research initiatives and enables these activities to enrich the teaching and learning experience at all levels. Research builds upon existing international leadership in a range of humanities disciplines and encourages the development of new areas through multi-disciplinary collaborations.
The Moore Institute leads in linking humanities with the knowledge society at national and international levels, through research in digital humanities and by developing strong relationships with the creative and cultural industries.
The Irish Centre for Human Rights is one of the world’s premier university-based institutions for the study and promotion of human rights and humanitarian law
Irish Studies is an integrated, interdisciplinary programme of learning which seeks to explore key aspects of the Irish experience in its historical and contemporary settings. The Huston School of Film and Digital Media is an emerging centre for research into the role of media in culture.

The mission of the Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Studies is to foster the culture of research at NUI Galway by bringing scholars and graduate students at the University into contact with their peers in the top-ranking humanities research institutes throughout the world. The Institute promotes research and research-led teaching in the area of its remit, and furthers this mission through structural linkages with analogous research centres in partner universities in Ireland and abroad. It has developed an innovative inter-institutional research training programme, known as Texts, Contexts, Cultures with Trinity College, Dublin, and University College, Cork, and played a leadership role in the establishment of the all-island collaborative network Humanities Serving Irish Society. In promoting its mission the Institute seeks to combine technology and culture in new ways that enrich the lives of individuals and communities, and to foster the skills of early stage researchers in the use of new technologies. This dimension of the Institute’s activities assists senior researchers in developing the capacity of their research students for employment in the academic and public spheres as well as in the cultural and creative industries. The Institute is particularly associated with research that cuts across disciplines, demanding creative thinking and dynamic interactions.
