NUI Galway is now firmly established in the top tier of research-intensive universities in Europe. Research is conducted over a broad range of subject areas from Marine Science to Social Policy, Biomedical Science to Irish Studies. The University is at the
forefront of global research in certain specialist fields such as stem cell and gene therapy research, human rights law, environmental change and developing the next generation of internet technology. Research activity at the University has undergone a period of rapid development in recent years and important initiatives have attracted substantial funding, internationally renowned academics, as well as research staff and graduate students of the highest calibre.
The University has certain priority areas of research excellence. These thematic areas are interdisciplinary in nature, and involve researchers from across the Schools & Colleges within the university The themes are:

Within each thematic area there are a number of research centres and institutes, each with its own specific research focus.
Approximately 3,500 postgraduate students are currently enrolled at NUI, Galway. The University views graduate students as being essential to the continuing development of its research activities and value the contribution the postgraduate community makes to the academic and cultural life of the University. In order to enhance your postgraduate experience the University has established a set of research degree guidelines and is developing training modules to support your research. The Graduate Studies Office is on hand to oversee your studies and assist you in your research needs. The Dean of Graduate Studies is responsible for the overall management of University postgraduate research programmes.
