Welcome to the Discipline of Health Promotion

Margaret Barry. Established Professor of Health Promotion and Public Health

The Discipline of Health Promotion is the only one of its kind in Ireland and was established with the support of the Department of Health as part of a revised national structure for Health Promotion in 1990. Our main activities are training and education and research.

Our Mission

Our mission is to advance the promotion of health and wellbeing through the development of Health Promotion research, education and training.

Our objectives are to:

  • Provide multidisciplinary education and training that is flexible, accessible and relevant.
  • Generate and disseminate Health Promotion research of national and international relevance.
  • Translate research that will lead to the development of healthy public policy and evidence-informed practice.
  • Provide international leadership in the development of the Health Promotion theory, research and methods.
  • Work in the University and wider community in ways that reflect the principles and values of Health Promotion.

We have an active research programme successfully securing competitive funding at regional, national and international levels. Research is undertaken through the Health Promotion Research Centre (HPRC), which is a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion Research.
