This Certificate programme takes place over 1 year and aims to provide students with a professional education and training in the principles and practice of health promotion, with students taking a generic module, a specialist module and a practical project. The course is open to those working in a professional capacity in a specialist health promotion field.
There are various streams:
1 Oral health
2 Youth health
3 Health promotion in Community development settings
4 Health promotion in Disabilities services settings
5 Sexual health and health Promotion
6 Health Promotion in Preschool settings.
Other streams may be added at a later date.
The Certificate programme in a chosen specialism is a taught programme comprising the following three modules:
The first two modules include workshop participation and self pced instructional materials and assignments for home study,while the third module focuses on project work.

Each module carries 5 ECTs and successful graduates who wish to apply for the NUi Galway Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion programme can carry forward 5 ECTS from the specialism module completed as part of the Certificate programme.

These courses are intended for those who wish to pursue a career in the area of health and safety. The subject content is multidisciplinary and this is also reflected in the student intake. Both courses meet the requirements of the Irish Health and Safety Authority (HAS).
The Higher Diploma is recognised by An Bord Altranais for the purpose of Occupational Health Nursing. The minimum entry requirement to the Higher Diploma programme is a BSc (general) degree or the possession of a relevant primary degree or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Faculty for purposes of this Diploma (e.g. RGN).
The MSc course is open to students who have obtained an Honours BSc degree or its equivalent as determined by the Faculty of Science, in an appropriate discipline.
Both the Higher Diploma and MSc programmes incorporate a taught course involving 7 subject areas. In addition, Masters students must complete an advanced course of study on the chosen subject area of their dissertation.

The aim of the M.Phil. (Health Sciences – Social Care) is to prepare graduates to develop, improve and enhance knowledge and understanding in their chosen area of research. The M.Phil. programme requires students to conduct a piece of independent and original research, normally comprising the design of an empirical study and the collection, analysis and interpretation of data under the supervision of a member of academic staff of the Discipline of Health Promotion. The M.Phil. may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis. A wide variety of career opportunities exist for graduates of this programme in Ireland and abroad; graduates are qualified to pursue a career in Health Promotion or to incorporate the disciplinary principles into their work.
