There are opportunities in the History Department for students to pursue higher degrees in History, either to lead to a career in academic research, or to have a further year to investigate themes of interest before going on to another career. A degree in History is clearly a good preparation for a career as a teacher, archivist, librarian, historical consultant, or genealogist. But most History graduates go on to careers where it will be the skills they have learned, rather than the specific knowledge, that will be of use to them. Recent History graduates are working in journalism (newspapers, radio, and television), applied communications, human resource management, the diplomatic service, financial services, computer hardware and software companies, the Garda Síochána, and in administration. Some have pursued careers in law, and a small number in business. Even for those who are not going to pursue careers directly related to history, the opportunities for more in-depth study offered by a Masters degree can be a rewarding experience - and it is one which is often well-regarded by employers.
The History Department offers a taught MA in History, a structured PhD, an MLitt by research and a PhD by research, and members of staff participate in several interdisciplinary taught Masters. There is a monthly seminar for all research students in History.
