research degrees

The History Department offers both PhD and MA degrees by research. These degrees are approved on the basis of a dissertation only - there are no taught elements. Students working towards a PhD have usually already completed a Masters degree (either taught or research, in Galway or elsewhere). Being a research graduate student can be a lonely life, so it is crucial that students considering this option have a deep interest in their subject, and a commitment to producing a piece of original research. It is equally important that they have a research topic which is both interesting to them, and viable in the context of a research degree. The MA by research usually takes at least two years, while the PhD usually takes at least three years. These are minimum times, because people take different lengths of time to do the research and writing that is necessary.
Students admitted to work for research degrees work under the supervision of a member of staff (the Supervisor), who guides their reading and research, and helps them to develop analytical writing skills. Students who are considering a research degree are therefore advised to contact the member of staff with the appropriate interests to talk about possible projects. The potential Supervisor will be able to make suggestions about suitable projects. It is wise to do this as early as possible, as applications for PhD funding from the
Irish Council for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences
have to be in by the end of April, and these applications must include a carefully thought-out research proposal.
Admission to a research degree is at the discretion of the potential Supervisor and the Head of Department. Candidates should have obtained a good honours degree in History, and for the PhD, would usually already hold a Master's degree.
