exams and assessment
scruduithe agus measunuithe
First Year Students are examined at the end of the academic year, in the summer. They are also expected to complete six short assignments during the year, the best five of which will make up 20% of the final grade.
Second Year and
Third Year students follow a modular course of studies, and are examined on a semester basis, with examinations at Christmas and again in the summer in each of those years.
Final assessment is usually by formal examination, in an examination hall, at the end of each semester, but some courses are examined by extended (take-home) essay. Most courses also require students to produce mid-term essays or other assignments which will count as part of the overall grade.
In
Third Year, students have the choice, in each semester, of opting for examination by extended essay (with the prior permission of the Lecturer) in one of their three courses. (Permission is entirely at the discretion of the Lecturer, who will take class performance, etc., into account when making her/his decision.)
For
Second,
Third, or
Fourth Arts, a candidate who obtains less than 40% in a subject must represent in the Autumn in any of the modules in Semester 1 or 2 examinations for which the grade is E or absent. A candidate who obtains less than 40% in a subject in the Autumn examination must represent in all modules in that subject.
