The Galway Advertiser is a local newspaper, which appears every Wednesday on-line. It contains a comprehensive list of private accommodation for both long and short term renting and also contains contacts for accommodation agencies. Its website address is http://www.galwayadvertiser.ie/

The Buildings Office are responsible for booking meeting rooms and for any maintenance requests. In each department there is a Buildings Liaison person who deals directly with the Buildings Department. The University crèche is located behind Distillery Road and places are available for Staff and Student's children. It is advisable to book early as there are limited places available. The crèche can be contacted on Extension: 3739.
The College Gallery has exhibitions running all year round. Admission is free for students, staff and members of the public. The Gallery is located in the Quadrangle Building (please ask for directions at the Porter's Desk at the Archway entrance to the Quadrangle Building).
The User Support Centre (USC) is a service provided for all staff and students, both undergraduate and postgraduate. It offers a "one-stop shop" for all your computing related problems/queries.
Campbell Catering operate nine restaurants while the Student's Union operate two.

The University provides a free 24-hour counselling service to help staff with concerns and problems such as work pressure, career uncertainty, relationship difficulties, alcohol and drug abuse etc. It is an independent and confidential service that extends to immediate family of staff members also. These services are available to employees at no charge.

Eyesight Testing where employees* habitually use "display screen equipment" (typically computers or microfiches), as a significant part of their normal work, they may be affected by physical and/or visual discomfort if their workstation is inappropriately set up or used. Legislation was enacted in 1993 which set down certain requirements for eye and eye sight testing for such employees* as follows:
employees* are entitled to an eye and eyesight test prior to commencing computer/display screen equipment work, at regular intervals thereafter or if an employee experiences visual difficulties which may be due to computer/display screen equipment work.
The University has availed of a computer-based vision screening service, to assess employees eyesight with respect to computer /display screen equipment work, on site. Persons wishing to avail of this scheme, must first verify their entitlement to do so, by completing the application form (available from the University Safety Office).
NUI Galway has teaching and research interests in the sciences, engineering, law, commerce, medicine and humanities. The James Hardiman Library at NUI Galway supports the information needs of students and faculty at the University with a collection covering a wide range of subjects, supported by a team of information specialists.

There are two Porters Desks, one located in the Archway at the entrance to the Quadrangle Building and another located in the Main Concourse near the main entrance. The internal and external mail can be left at the Porters Desks. The Porters will also give directions to anywhere on the campus.

To apply to become a member of the Staff Club an application form is available at
http://www.nuigalway.ie/administration_services/staff_club/. This form once completed should be forwarded to the Staff Club Membership Secretary (currently Sharon Flynn, Extension: 3481 or

nuigalway.ie). The membership is currently € 3.50 per month and will be deducted automatically from your salary monthly, or weekly if you are paid weekly. You will be sent a Staff Club Card to gain access to the Staff Club which is located in the Quadrangle where light refreshments and lunches are available. Daily newspapers and a wide range of magazines are made available to members. In
addition, there is a multi-channel TV. The rooms are kept locked and members are issued with a swipe card.
Dial 0 for the switchboard. The switchboard operates during normal University hours from 9:15 a.m. to 1:00p.m. and from 2:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. The University has an automated operator on Extension 2888. This system will ask you for the name of the person or department you require and then put you through. The National University of Ireland, Galway bookshop is located in the Basement, under the library. It carries most of the course books needed but if you need more just ask and they can be ordered. The shop also carries a large selection of trade, academic books and paperbacks. Payment can be made by cash, credit card, or, for institutional items, by invoice.
