POLICIES & PROCEDURES: RECRUITMENT: GENERAL PRINCIPLE
Policy Statement - General Principle
Through the promulgation of this policy it is the intention of the University to maintain a means by which the best candidates for jobs will be selected. It is the central tenet of this policy that commitment to the merit principle will assist the continuing development of the University as a centre of excellence. This inherently guarantees equality of opportunity. Failure to provide equality of opportunity would deny the University access to the full range of applicants and by definition preclude meritorious candidates. It is essential, therefore, that the University provides equal access to employment opportunities according to a person's ability to do the job and free from any arbitrary or irrelevant considerations. In doing so, careful consideration must be given to such things as how jobs are advertised, who makes selection decisions, what methods are used and how those involved in the process carry out the task. The procedures governed by this policy provide a systematic and objective method of assessing and selecting people and must be applied in the light of the principles contained in this policy. It is the duty of every person involved in recruitment to ensure that this policy and the procedures, which flow from it, are robustly applied and that the University's commitment to selection on merit is seen to be clear and unambiguous. Following these principles should ensure that this commitment is translated into action.
