The biostatistics core at the CRFG supports clinical and translational researchers in the preparation of grant applications, study design, statistical support and analysis. The Core is led by Dr John Newell, Senior Lecturer in Biostatistics in the CRFG and the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, NUIG.
The functions of the biostatistics unit include:
Providing statistical support to the Clinical Research Facility investigators regarding the preparation of grant applications, study design and analysis.
Ensuring that CRF research is published in leading international high impact journals.
Conducting research in Biostatistics.
Supervising postgraduate research degrees to MSc, MD and PhD level.

The MSc. in Biostatistics is by research and is offered in collaboration with the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, NUI Galway. Biostatistics is a field of statistics concerned with designing, analysing and interpreting health research. Biostatisticians are needed in virtually all health sciences disciplines. Research areas which rely heavily on biostatisticians include clinical trials, observational studies of disease causation, surveys, evaluation of diagnostic tests and medical imaging studies. Speakers:
Prof.
George P. McCabe. Professor in the Department of Statistics and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the College of Science at Purdue University
Dr. John Newell, Senior Lecturer in Biostatistics, HRB Clinical Research Facility and School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, NUIG
The workshop provides participants with an overview of fundamental biostatistical methods, an understanding of the key concept of variability and a practical working knowledge of the statistical techniques they are likely to encounter in applied medical research.
Techniques covered include study design, analysing one and two sample problems (independent and dependent data) through interval estimation and hypothesis testing approaches, comparing three or more samples (analysis of variance), sample size calculations and appraising medical statistics in the literature. Each session has been designed in the format of a workshop and will include lectures and computer-based practical work.
The Workshop has been approved by NUI Galway College of Science and School of Medicine for contribution to Structured PhD credit (5 ECTS).
Registration Fee: €300 for Academic Staff. Commercial rate available on request.

The success of the Introductory Course has led to a demand for an advanced course in Biostatistics.
This course is intended for those with a basic understanding of Statistical Ideas. The Introductory Course in Biostatistics (see above) would provide this, but a reasonable applied knowledge of designing and analysing simple studies would suffice.
The course will cover ideas in Statistical Modelling which incorporate Simple and Multiple Linear Regression, Logistic Regression and Proportional Hazards (or Cox) modelling for Survival data. Illustrations of these will include how to model foetal length on gestational age during pregnancy, to estimate the odds on surviving a "home" heart attack taking in to account the length of time until a paramedic arrives, to predict cardiac rehab attendance from a patient's pre-course depression score and to indicate how long it might take to climb Mont Blanc on the basis of a climber's resting heart rate and recent climbing history.
The main element of this course is that all participants learn how to analyse data themselves as well as know when to seek expert advice.
