Professor Giles has recently commenced his post as Director of the HRB Clinical Research Facility Galway. He holds joint positions in GUH, Trinity College Dublin and St James Hospital Dublin. He also has a leadership position in the HRB Wellcome Trust Dublin CRF. He is a cancer specialist with more than two decades of experience in the development of novel drugs, immunotherapies, and other highly targeted approaches, including cancer-directed viruses. He has served as principal investigator on numerous international Phase I, II and III clinical studies of many novel agents. He holds numerous patents and technology licenses. His awards have included the BioLink USA-Ireland Lifescience Award and the Medtronic Award for Health Care and Medical Science, NUIG.
Professor Giles has focused his clinical and research efforts on providing therapy for patients suffering from treatment-resistant or refractory cancer. He has pioneered the use of many agents that are now in regular use as targeted therapies for patients with cancer. In 2007, Nilotinib, a novel Bcr-Abl inhibitor, was approved in Europe and the USA for patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia, and became the latest agent for which Giles has led both the pre-clinical and clinical development. The principles of early-phase trials in oncology are readily applied to other clinical areas, including device-evaluation. He has extensive global regulatory and reimbursement strategy development and application experience.
Professor Giles is the founder and chairman of the International Oncology Study Group; a cooperative research group created in 1993 and composed of oncologists from 90 institutions in Australasia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA. He is also the founder and chairman of the Developmental Therapeutics Consortium, an international early phase study group.
His prior posts include Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Section of Developmental Therapeutics in the Department of Leukemia at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he also served as Vice-Chairman of the Institutional Review Board and Co-Chairman of the Division of Cancer Medicine Phase I Group. Previously, Prof. Giles also was a faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of California, Los Angeles. He has authored over 500 peer-reviewed articles on research in oncology in leading academic journals.
This year Professor Giles was awarded the Annual Saint Luke’s Silver Award by the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland, the highest honour bestowed by the Academy.
