Dr Seán Dinneen received his medical degree from University College Cork Medical School. He undertook postgraduate training in medicine in Ireland and then went to the United States where he trained in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic. After a period on staff at the Mayo Clinic he was appointed as a Community Diabetologist in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He spent 5 years working in the NHS before returning to Ireland in 2005 to take up a Senior Lecturer post in Medicine in Galway University Hospitals. His professional interests are in delivering programmes of self-management education for people with diabetes and developing optimal models of community-based diabetes care.
Developing optimal models for community-based diabetes care: this has been a major focus of Dr Dinneen’s work both at the Mayo Clinic and in Addenbrooke’s. Dr Dinneen, with the help of Sue Holmes, a GP with a special interest in diabetes, have produced a robust (and continuously updated) set of diabetes clinical practice guidelines for Southern Cambridgeshire. Using community-based diabetes specialist nurses they have introduced a number of different approaches to community-based care in the locality.
The role of Information Technology in Diabetes Care: to properly integrate care between the hospital and the community requires knowledge of the entire population of people with diabetes and the ability to share information easily across interfaces. Dr Dinneen was involved in the implementation of a clinical information system in Addenbrooke’s was awarded 3 rd place (and £10,000) in the Trust’s 2003/4 Outstanding Achievement Awards.
Self-management education programmes for people with diabetes: Dr Dinneen’s involvement with the Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) programme has been the most professionally rewarding work of his career. The principles of Therapeutic Patient Education, expounded originally by Jean-Phillipe Assal remain a professional mantra for him. Dr Dinneen was involved in the implementation of DAFNE in Addenbrooke’s and was recognised in a 2002/3 Outstanding Achievement Award. He is currently involved in the implementation and evaluation of the Irish DAFNE Study and a new model of ongoing care for people with type 1 diabetes, http://www.controlled-trials.com/ISRCTN79759174. Dr Dinneen is also a member of the Expert Advisory Group for Diabetes of the Health Service Executive. This is a 20 member group convened by the CEO to advise on all aspects of diabetes care delivery in Ireland. He is a member of the Standards of Care, Rethinopathy and Education/ Patient Empowerment sub-groups.
Leadership and Teamwork: these are key components of good diabetes care. Dr Dinneen has been fortunate to work with and to lead a number of very effective teams. The Addenbrooke’s Foot Team and the Southern Cambridgeshire Community Diabetes Team were both acknowledged by Addenbrooke’s Hospital and given “Over and Above” awards in 2004.
