Biostatistics Unit


The biostatistics core at the CRFG supports clinical and translational researchers in the preparation of grant applications, study design, statistical support and analysis.  The Core is led by Dr John Newell, Senior Lecturer in Biostatistics in the CRFG and the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, NUIG.  

The functions of the biostatistics unit include:

  • Providing statistical support to the Clinical Research Facility investigators regarding the preparation of grant applications, study design and analysis.
  • Ensuring that CRF research is published in leading international high impact journals.
  • Conducting research in Biostatistics.
  • Supervising postgraduate research degrees to MSc, MD and PhD level.

MSc. in Biostatistics (Research)

The MSc. in Biostatistics is by research and is offered in collaboration with the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, NUI Galway. Biostatistics is a field of statistics concerned with designing, analysing and interpreting health research. Biostatisticians are needed in virtually all health sciences disciplines. Research areas which rely heavily on biostatisticians include clinical trials, observational studies of disease causation, surveys, evaluation of diagnostic tests and medical imaging studies.
