Martin Reilly Lecture Series
Terry Moylan is a piper and dancer and now the chief archivist with Na Piobairí Uilleann at its Dublin headquarters on Henrietta St. He will present the first talk this year, which will take place at 6.30pm on 19th February 2013 at the Galway City Library. Terry’s talk, titled ‘Paddy’s Resource – The Songsters of the Society of United Irishmen’ will explore the content of the four editions of Paddy's Resource/The Harp of Erin, the songbooks published by the Society of United Irishmen. Terry will be looking at the repertoire of songs within the collections in terms of language, iconography and their political message, as well as considering the range of tunes to which the songs were set.Admission is free and all are welcome. This series is hosted by Comhrá Ceoil and the Centre for Isish Studies, NUI Galway.
Players Voyagers and Viewers
The second lecture in our series will be given by Dr Riana O'Dwyer (English) “Two Galway Playwrights: MJ Molloy and Tom Murphy” County Galway was the homeplace of two distinguished Irish playwrights in the twentieth century: M.J. Molloy (1917-1994) and Tom Murphy (born 1935). Many of their plays draw on the lives and historical experiences of those living in the north-east of the county, between Tuam, Milltown and the Mayo border. Their work was produced for the wider Irish public by the Abbey Theatre and Druid Theatre Company, but also by the Amateur Drama movement, which was active in every corner of the country through the agency of local theatre groups. This lecture will address the important contribution each of these writers made, through consideration of some of their influential plays, including Molloy's The Wood of the Whispering (1953) and Murphy's Famine (1968). Prof Paul Crowther Lecture at MIT
At the end of September Paul Crowther - Professor of Philosophy at NUIG - presented an invited guest lecture to the Department of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.( MIT was recently recognized as the world's top university in the QS World Rankings, and its Department of Architecture was the first to be created in the USA.) Professor Crowther lectured on 'Corporeal Structure and Architectural Cognition: A Re-Phenomenology'. His presentation considered the role of computing in architectural design on the basis of ideas from his recent books on phenomenology of the visual Arts. The lecture was offered as the outline of a new research project combining his philosophical work with extended field-studies of the world's most important architectural achievements.
Beyond the Island: Transnational Approaches to the Humanities in Ireland
Exploring transnational approaches to key themes of Irish scholarship - diaspora, nationalism, political violence, religious networks, human rights. International speakers, experts on transnational methodologies, will engage with non-Irish topics. The conference aims to cover a wide scope, with panels from late-medieval/early modern history to contemporary Ireland. Irish Theatre History Conference

Launch of book on Contemporary Irish Film
Contemporary Irish Film: New Perspectives on a National Cinema was launched by Lenny Abrahamson. Bringing together scholars from Ireland and abroad, this collection provides insiders’ as well as outsiders’ perspectives on the situation of Irish film in a period of a socio-economic sea change: the years of the so-called Celtic Tiger. The unprecedented economic growth and immigration that Ireland experienced between 1995 and 2007 did not only challenge national but also ethnic, social and gender identities. The contributions to this volume explore how films tackle these challenges and help to make sense of Ireland’s altered position in a globalised world. Among the films discussed are some of the most critically acclaimed Irish films of recent years, including Once (2006), Adam & Paul (2004), Garage (2007), and The Secret of Kells (2009), as well as the work of Oscar-winning director and writer Neil Jordan.
